About Us

Growing up in New territories, Hong Kong, Matthew Fan has been in love with many small creatures- dogs, cats, birds and even tropical fishes. A childhood'd dream has led to the establishment of Eastern Magic Kennel in1983, while Matthew was still a young student taking public buses to school every day. Matthew did not understand the true meaning of a breeder then. Yet he embarked on a journey that he never looked back. Matthew has owned and bred many different dogs in the past 33 years, Chinese breeds- Shih Tzu, Pekingnese, Lhasa Apso, Tibetian Mastiffs,, Pugs, and , of course, Chow Chow, has always occupied a special place in his heart. Chow Chow, the loyal, aloof and almost mythical ancient breed, has especially taken center stage at Eastern Magic kennel over the years.

Many champions were bred and trained by Eastern Magic over the last few decades. In Hong Kong, Eastern Magic's own turf, the many Chows raised by Matthew have won across the segments - best of the breeds, different age groups, best locally-bred, best breeder, and best in show etc. Eastern Magic has also grown quickly in step with the Chinese canine industry by jointly developing a great variety of breeds and winning many prizes across China in the last twenty years.

Matthew started to show his Chows in the USA at the start of the new millennia, and successfully lifted the professionalism of Eastern Magic along the way. The regular participation in the highly competitive and deeply knowledgeable American dogs shows have resulted in a fundamental change for Eastern Magic, which takes a precise and scientific approach in breeding pups. Starting with Floyd, Eastern Magic has had so many Chows winning major championships in the USA - son of Floyd, US, HK Ch Eastern Magic I Got The Answer, daughter of Floyd US, HK Ch Eastern Magic Flora etc. And the legendary Mayli - US Cn Ch Eastern Magic Channel Beauty grand-daughter of Floyd, beat the long- standing US champion, Dreamer at a young age of ten months on October 1, 2007 (China's National Day) to complete the long lists of championships won by her kennel. Mayli subsequently won the best bitch in show at 2008 Westminster Dogs Show - the first Chinese-bred dog to win such an honor. Not only she was the first non-American bred chow to win this great prize in Westminster's 140 years' history, she was also the first Chow whom came (back) from Asia to be crown best bitch (SEL) in show. Mayli went ahead to win the second best of breed in the same competition. She also won the best of Chow Chow, and the third prize in non-sporting group at the year-end Eukanuba Cup 2008. Mayli was the first Chow Chow to reach such high achievement in the Eukanuba National Championship shows.

Eastern Magic takes no breather after such glorious victories. On a ever stronger footing, Mayli's son, MBIS, US Grand Ch, HK, Cn Ch Eastern Magic Notting Hill, Norton becomes the first Asia-born Chow Chow to be crown US's Grand Champion. Norton won the best of breed Chow Chow in the three shows prior to Eukanuba's National Championship. Within the short three months Norton was in the USA, he won the 8th place within the Chow Chow group for the year of xxxx. Pilot, the well-known US Grand Champion, HK Cn Ch. Eastern Magic Fly Me Safe, is the grandson of Mayli. Pilot are the consecutive champions for the years 2014 and 2015, which is a new record for Chow Chow as a breed in more than a decade. Not only has Pilot won the most Best in Show prizes, he also came first in the the non-sporting group in 2014. In 2015, Pilot carried on to win the best Chow Chow while came fifth in non-sporting group. We are so proud of Pilot. He is a new milestone for Eastern Magic in breeding great dogs.

Matthew, following in the footsteps of many professional pioneers, has grown from just a breeder, to show handler., and now judges in many international dog shows. Starting from 2004, Matthew has become the designated judge for FCI and Hong Kong Kennel Club. He was the judge for the Toy Group in 2012, and the judge for All Dogs Group in 2015. The most impressionable judging experience for Matthew so far were the 2011 European Chow Chow Show held in Belgium, and the 2014 Italian Chow Chow National Show held in Milan. Both shows are the internationally significant Chow Chow National Championships. And Matthew was honored to be the first Chinese to be judging these shows.
